- In 1902 the Midwife Act was passed by parliament but did not become fully effective until 1905
- Before this time any woman or man could practice midwifery, it was an untrained, unqualified and uncertified role
- The purpose of the Act was to ‘secure better training of midwives to regulate their practice’.
- After 1905 you could not call yourself a midwife unless you were certified under the Act
- This was the start of the name of the midwife being on a roll and names being removed if concerns over the midwife’s practice were noted
